I can’t say enough about this product. Most impressive is the company’s commitment to addressing what few flaws the product has. I would recommend (and have recommended) this product to anyone I know who plays golf. I’ve organized my review by category for ready reference. If you don’t believe what I have to say, note that GAME GOLF already has the backing of the PGA of America, Golf Channel, and numerous prominent touring professionals (including Graeme McDowell, Lee Westwood, and Jim Furyk). And it’s already being sold in Apple stores worldwide. That’s heady stuff for a technology startup. But, as its slogan goes, GAME GOLF is, indeed, changing the game. *Setup* I won’t say much here, as the GAME GOLF website ([…]) has a handy video explaining the setup (and much more). But I will say that it’s as easy to set up as it is to use. Simply screw the corresponding red tag flush into the handle of each club, complete the online registration, charge the device, and you’re good to go. *Ease of Use* “Tag and go” might sound too good to be true, but it is true. After you turn on the device, and the white light (alone) begins to blink, tag the butt end of each club to the bottom of the device at the location of your shot, hit the shot, go to your next shot, and repeat. It’s that simple (you don’t even have to select the course you’re playing; the device figures that out for you). The hard part, at least at first, is remembering to tag. Within a round or two, however, it becomes second nature. Because tagging (which captures both (1) which club you’re hitting and (2) the location from which you’re hitting it–i.e., the two inputs that allow GAME GOLF to compile most every statistic you could ever want) is so critical to performance of the device, the device includes three different indicators of a successful tag. Upon tagging, the device beeps (loud enough for you to hear, but quiet enough to not bother player partners), vibrates, and turns green. If you don’t hear a beep or feel a vibration and are unsure of whether you have tagged, check the device to see if the green light is on. If you tagged, the green light remains on for 60 seconds. Therefore, if you look down and the green light is not on, odds are you forgot to tag–so tag again. As for when to tag, you can do it before or after your shot, as long as you tag at the location of your shot. I have played 22 rounds with the device, and, from the beginning, have tagged as the first move in my pre-shot routine. I pick my club, stand next to the ball, and, while checking out my lie, tag the device. Then I take my practice swing and go. I would advise tagging before you hit, as opposed to after, because the mind is often less attentive after you hit (especially if you hit a bad shot). As for where to place the device, I have found it easiest–and least intrusive–on the outside of my left hip (I’m a righty). I never feel it there (whereas when I placed it closer to my midsection, I would feel it while bending down to read putts, pick up tees, etc.). Note that the device is very sensitive, so if you are wearing a sweater or rain jacket, you don’t need to lift the sweater/jacket before tagging; the tag will go right through your clothing with ease. *Ease of Editing* The post-round editing process is fun, if for no other reason than that you get to do what you would do anyway (relive your round), but with images and statistics to confirm your every move. You plug your device into your computer (for now, you cannot plug your device into a tablet or phone), the GAME GOLF transfer software automatically opens, and you click on the button that downloads your round(s) (the device stores up to 9 rounds at a time, making it usable during buddies trips where you leave your computer at home). Once the round has been downloaded (it takes 1-2 minutes), click the view button and you will be taken to the GAME GOLF website. There, you will see your round visually depicted and overlaid onto a Google Earth image of the course you just played. It’s like Shot Tracker on PGATour.com, but better (because you’re seeing the actual hole, not a graphical computerized image of it). You can then edit your round to ensure that all shots were tagged (you can easily add or delete shots, including penalty strokes), and tagged in the right location (you can easily move the location of each shot). Sometimes, the location is off by even more than the advertised standard deviation. But, instead of getting frustrated, just move the location of your shot and remember that, even for the pros, Shot Tracker occasionally gets it wrong. After you have finished editing your round, click “sign your round” and the real fun then begins. Best Golf Improvement I’ve Ever Used,

This product is probably the most useful golf training tool I’ve used since the swing analyzers first came out a couple of years ago. Even with my Swingbyte telling me my club head speed (per club) on the range, I never really knew how far I hit each of my clubs. With Game Golf, I can now see what my game REALLY looks like when I play a round. Being able to see the actual played yardage of each shot is AMAZING! I thought I hit my 7-iron 170 yds but after 3 rounds with my Game Golf, I see I’m actually hitting it 162 yds on average. On my very next round I used a 6-iron from 172 yds out and stuck it 4 feet from the flag. Suddenly the phrase "Don’t under club again" made sense.
The review of my rounds also showed that my putting trend for the first three rounds I recorded was 2.4 putts per hole. Ouch! I’ve already started focusing more on my putting before I play a round and my last round average was 2.1 putts per hole. Not quite as good as the pros that are on the system but I’m already seeing improvements. Oh, and being able to go back to see how I played a round previously to learn from my mistakes on the course is pretty darn cool. Smarter golf is actually fun when you finish your round with a lower score than you normally get! 0

I’m returning the unit because the first generation technology and software just doesn’t live up to the hype. I purchased a rangefinder instead.
Usability: From tee to green the device is very simple to use. You just tag your shot before you hit. On the greens its a bit more tricky, since there’s no built in way to identify the hole location, I found myself trying to tag extra shots at the hole sometimes, and forgetting to other times. Editing all the hole locations and adding/deleting shots post-round was a pain and too time consuming. Accuracy: Putting: The devices accuracy limitation make it absolutely useless for gathering putting data or statistics. Software: (1) Lack of useful stats. This devices tracks GIR, Fairways, etc. Thats it. It doesn’t record the direction of fairway or green misses. Given all of the data the device gathers, Game Golf could easily compile stats for strokes gained driving, long irons, approach shots, etc. You could compare yourself to golfers with various handicap levels, etc. Sadly none of this exists. (2) No access to your raw data. You get your club averages (which I think is the median of your distances) but thats it. Since Game Golf doesn’t disclose on their software exactly how they are coming up with the numbers, I have no idea what I’m actually looking at. At least give me access to a downloadable csv file with all my data so I can figure out my own stats in excel. (3) Can’t search users by golf course. I have no idea which of my friends own the Game Golf device. It would be nice to be able to view all of the users at a given course so you can compare yourself to your peers at your local club, etc. Conclusion: 0 |
